Continuing education providers and courses are approved by the Board of Funeral Services for the sole purpose of offering continuing education hours to funeral directors, embalmers, and/or cremationists licensed in Alabama. Participation in an approved continuing education course does not qualify any person who does not hold a license pursuant to the requirements of Title 34, Chapter 13 of the Code of Alabama to engage in any business, profession, or practice regulated and defined in ยง34-13-1.

All providers and courses must be Board approved. Funeral Directors, Embalmers, and Cremationists are required to complete 8-hours of continuing education per person biennially. Included in the required eight hours, all licensees must complete a board approved continuing education course in ethics and blood-borne pathogens/universal precautions. Alabama requires a certification of completion be awarded upon the successful completion of all approved course.

The Board of Funeral Services requires licensees to complete Continuing Education prior to their license being renewed. Licensees who are 65 years of age or older and have held a license for 10 years prior to the end of the reporting period are exempt from CE requirements. A licensee who has more than 8 hours of continuing education in a renewal period, may carry over a maximum of 4 hours to the next renewal period.

Courses that are for academic credit by a Mortuary Science College approved by the American Board of Funeral Service Education shall be approved unless the course is taken to obtain licensure as a Funeral Director, Embalmer or Cremationist.
